Conclusion

In conclusion, we felt that the article became repetitive but had valuable information. It often seemed as though the research seemed to be common sense with some of its conclusions. In the end, the article claimed that "managers running smaller firms have a wider variety of roles and different priorities than those running larger enterprises", which seems like an obvious conclusion. The paper also argues that much of the management development literature is dominated by the concerns of the development of larger organizations. So perhaps the gap lies in a lack of information on the management of smaller organizations.

After reviewing both articles, it is clearly evident how small business firms can have advantages compared to larger firms. It depends on individual motivations and what kind of entrepreneur the owner/manager is and the direction they want their business to go in.

Article #1 mentions that “success if frequently identified in terms of universal economic indicators when many of these firms are being run by people who have other motives for running the enterprise.” Watch the video and answer the question of "Who and What Defines Success?"

  1. I think success is defined by the individual. I believe each person has a different view on what success is and how successful you need to be in life, in order to be happy.

  2. What an inspiring video :)!
All is true, those are the basics of success in this life.
Success to me are components of all the things metioned.. taking a step out of your comfort zone, challenging yourself, visioning what you want, believing in yourself... and most importantly follow your heart.
No matter how much money you have, what type of car or house you own.. the bottom line is happiness.
Success = Following your heart :)

  3. I feel that it is unfair, especially anyone viewing an entrepreneurial situation can define someone else's success. In my opinion, success is defined by how a person feels about what they have accomplished. For example, someone who really struggles with a class could define success as 60%, but someone who consistently gets 90's would probably not consider 60% a "success". If you have accomplished your goals, i feel that you can be called successful.

  4. I believe that everyone has to define their own version of success because each individual person is unique. They all have their own unique goals which also help them define their level of success. I'd also like to say without the pump up music in the background that video would not have been nearly as cool.

  5. Success is subjective; anyone who considers themselves to be successful should be measuring on his or her own terms, not by what others tell them. To me, success is overcoming obstacles and accomplishing goals, however small our big, and having the ability to control the outcomes of my life's circumstances.

  6. In order to success in the small business, you will need to become competitive in your industry. There are many competitor around you. Therefore, in order to become competitive, you will need to differentiate with somebody else. The video shows that "you are unique and special" and "you have limit value." So everybody is different and everybody has own potential. If you can fit into one company, doesn't means you cannot fit into another company. Therefore, try something different in order to success.

  7. The trouble with subjective definitions lies within the measurement of the subjectiveness of the concept. In order to further the tourism industry, it is necessary to DEFINE success to accurately research success factors. I find it paradoxical to chastise researchers who have engaged in leading edge research in tourism success who have, in fact, attempted to define success. It is important to consider that for a government to provide programs to engage in aiding tourism firms, reputable data must suggest a course of action. This cannot be done if a subjective approach to success is to be utilized.

I define success as the successful achievement of profits to allow the financial stability of an organization. PERIOD.

  8. Success is a personal concept. For me, it equates to happiness, pride, and the feeling of being content. Success is finishing, or taking part in, a task and realizing that I did the best I could - regardless of the outcome. Success is looking around and thinking about how wonderful life is. Its being proud of who I am in the face of adversity and discrimination. For me, success is simply living a life filled with appreciation and love.

  9. I liked the video, but I really think that success is defined within yourself. We talked about this a lot in class, for some people breaking even is success, for others it's making lots of profit. I don't agree that specific things will make everyone successful. Not everyone is the same. Success is measured within :)

  10. I liked the last video, especially the part about avoiding negativity. I found that when trying to start a business there are always tons of people telling you that you can't do it or that it won't work. I think that if you just stay positive and trust yourself that you will have a much better chance of succeeding.
